World Food Market

There is a new world food mart opened on Hallim high street, to accomdate to the rising numbers of South East Asians, who work as deck hands, or in the harbour. The scent is lovely, & stays in your fingertips & clothes for hours. i go there just to smell the place & be made to smell.

World Food Market

If i could
capture the scent
of the World Food Market
i’d be the greatest poet
in the world.

But it’s impossible.
i touched 1 thing, egg noodles,
2 at most, but it doesn’t account

for the staid after taste
of perfume, still settled on my skin
an hour or so later.

Something of acrid fruits,
but soft— no edge, not spice & yet
the tight whip of it.

A taste without flavor,
on the tip of my tongue— familiar,
a whole culture removed.

i can’t put
my finger on it.
It’s useless to
insist on definition
—speaks volumes…

    1. Cheers Pablo. i am really trying to get to the bottom of some sensations & it is proving very difficult to get at. It is slow going, but i keep it spinning round inside & hope the correct arrangement of words is loosened from where ever they get loosened from & allow me to get to the bottom of whatever it is i need to get to, in this case, the mystery of an amalgamated scent, in a World Food Market.

        It’s very specific. Simple, but the sensations it describes are endless. The market, the spices, the sailors and vendors, the sea port and the foreign Englishman taking it all in. It’s quite good.
