singing bowl ㅂ

the next consonant :ㅂ, in a series of poems about a singing bowl, written after Robert Okaji’s shutters poems. go here to read the original prolegomenon.

monks take it door
to door, it chants
for the needy to the needy.
circling the soft mallet
along the basin’s edge,
takes patience & precision.
for whose effort
do the needy fill them both
with morsels of food,
a balled up fist of rice,
a ladle of bone soup?
& what has it filled them with?
a brassy cosmos
or sustained syllable in C,
a hope for a better rebirth
or just a pretty noise
like bells hung in
the hug of a tornado?

a penny for your thoughts
